Koh Ker was a remarkable ancient capital established under King Jayavarman IV in the 10th century. The king moved the royal capital away from Angkor to Koh Ker and created a powerful sacred city, with Prasat Thom as its monumental centerpiece.
One of the great mysteries of Koh Ker is its unusual orientation. Many of its major temples are aligned approximately 14° toward the northeast, rather than directly east. The exact reason remains debated, but some theories connect this orientation with ancient astronomical knowledge, the movement of the sun, and religious beliefs.
Koh Ker was more than a capital—it was a bold expression of King Jayavarman IV’s power, vision, and the extraordinary knowledge of the ancient Khmer civilization.
