I rise before dawn
and start each day
before meditation
with the sacred mantra
Om Mani Padme Hum
I have been doing this
for years and decided
to read up on it again.
It first appeared in the
Mahayana Buddhist text
Kāraṇḍavyūha Sūtra,
It is the Essence of the
Bodhisattva of Compassion
Avalokiteshvara aka Guanyin
I further read on that
Gautama Buddha said it was
the most beneficial mantra
It basically contains all the
Buddhist teachings and that
the Bodhisattva uses it to help
others to attain enlightenment
and enter into Nirvana.
The mantra is often
translated literally as
“Hail to the Jewel in the Lotus".
It is viewed as a condensed
form of all Buddhist teachings.
Each of its six syllables
represents a form
of spiritual perfection
(paramita) and the
purification of specific
negative emotions:
* Om (Generosity):
Purifies pride and ego.
* Ma (Ethics):
Purifies jealousy and
the lust for entertainment.
* Ni (Patience):
Purifies excessive
passion and desire.
* Pad (Diligence):
Purifies ignorance
and prejudice.
* Me (Renunciation):
Purifies possessiveness
and greed.
* Hum (Wisdom):
Purifies aggression
and hatred.
